International Book Day is coming soon on April 23rd and I have decided to share a post for helping you to start reading a book or to involve your friends in this amazing adventure.
Some people believe that someone who loves reading started loving books by magic. But it is not that way how the journey starts. It pains me to hear that reading is such a tedious occupation, it should be an amazing adventure. I am going to share with you some tips I always give for finding a great book you will like and for reading those obligatory books that seem to be a nightmare. But don´t forget:
Reading a book is always living an adventure.
Find What You Love
This sounds weird, at least when I help people finding a book for them to read, the first question is what do you like? This question is useful for introducing children to literature, do they like dinosaurs or fairies; or both?
Try searching for books with the topics you enjoy. This is the basic rule even for fiction. Go to a library, look carefully at the signs on the bookshelves and identify the different topics you can find there. If you love fairies and elves, try fantasy and fantastic book stand; if you enjoy space, try the science fiction section; if you think you are interested in ghost check out the gothic section. If you are interested in reading something modern, try the contemporary shelf. But if you are thinking of books that have been loved for years, go ahead to classics.
There is nothing more joyful than finding more about what attracts you.
Check if the Book is Suitable for you
There are some things that you should consider when choosing a book:
I. The Story
Some people believe that the cover of the book is the first thing we notice when we pick up a book. But it is not the most important thing. Read the back of the cover to find out what the book is about, how the adventure is going to be, does it sound interesting to you?
II. The Typing
Other considerations which are fundamental are the book format. Some people will read a book if it has a big typing. The writing for them should be in a comfortable typing for them. It is a detail, but if you have to read wearing glasses imagine reading a book with a very tiny format, surely will be stressful and not fun at all.
III. The Format
When you hold the book, does it feels good when you pass the pages? Is it comfortable? Consider the book format, the most popular ones are hardback and paperback. If you would love carrying the book around with you, I would suggest paperback, it is lighter.
IV. Ilustrated or not
Usually, when people think about illustrated books they think about children literature. But books for young adults and adults are being more frequently illustrated. If you love art and are a more visual person, this seems to be a great option for you. If you want to relax when reading, this is a good option too, because illustrations will allow you to make a brief pause.
V. The Smell
Sounds crazy or even insane, but books should always smell great for you! Imagine opening those pages and appreciate that wonderful essence every time you pass the pages.
There are some considerations that are important before reading a book. They seem to be minor but they may affect your perception of a book and your reading.
I. Where to Read
Finding a comfortable place to read is fundamental, but you should always remember that it should be a space that looks cosy to you and should not necessarily be among the popular opinion. The most frequent places to read is a sofa, by the window, in the garden, and the floor with many pillows.
II. Read Listening to Music or Not Music at All
This is one of the most interesting points. Before I studied literature, I used to read with music, it was great to search for a moody song that could be related to my reading. But now, I cannot do such thing because it distracts my focus on what I am reading.
It is your own choice.
Read, Read & Read
Begin the adventure of reading! Open the book and smell it, pass the pages and feel the comfortable texture. If when reading there is so much information, do not worry. To enjoy even more the experience you can:
I. Find a Nice Bookmark, Anything for Bookmark or no Bookmark At All
There are several options to mark the pages, you can find a beautiful bookmark of your liking or craft it yourself. Or you can use anything to mark the page you are reading. Or just not use bookmark at all, and try remembering the page or the section of the book you had read.
II. Write Down The Quotes You Like
That is important when reading. You can write them down on a notebook or your phone. You can add sticky notes inside the book you are reading to mark the quotations. Or you can even mark it slightly with an erasable mine pencil.
III. Focus On What You Love
Again, if this is a book that you had to read as obligatory, and you are not liking it, do not worry. No one can love everything, or it rarely happens. And you can neither focus on everything. Notice what you love. For example, if you love animals, you can focus on how they are represented in the narrative.
IV. Enjoy Your Reading!
